EARLIER WORK LAND OF GOLD
This   work   is   informed    by   the   music   of   the spectacular    sitar    artist/composer    Anoushka Shankar      -      daughter      of      Ravi      Shankar.        Anoushka   has   seen   into   my   own   heart/mind in   the   way   she   speaks   for   and   has   touched so    many    others    recently.        Many    of    these paintings    are    an    attempt    to    acknowledge the   depth   of   her   work.      Other   paintings   in   this series   are   inspired   by   the   myth   of   Odysseus and   his   necessarily   creative    s earch    for    Home.      In     star ting    each    painting,    I    set    the    sails    for “home”   and   recognize,   as   I   work,   that   Home is the actual process of the work.  Anoushka's    influence:         "Everyone    is,    in some   way   or   another,   searching   for   their   own “Land    of    Gold”:    a    journey    to    a    place    of security,      connectedness      and      tranquility, which   they   can   call   home.   This   journey   also represents   the   interior   quest   that   we   all   take to    find    a    sense    of    inner    peace,    truth    and acceptance – a universal desire that unites

humanity.      The   seeds   of   LAND   OF   GOLD   originated   in   the   context   of   the   humanitarian plight of refugees."    ~Anoushka Shankar 2016 Painting   is   a   way    for   me   to   understand   that   there   really   never   is   a   solid   place   to stand   and   yet   the   process   of   finding   this   out   in   a   painting   is   just   exactly   the   land   of gold   itself.   My   own   situation   is   fortunate   as   I   explore   the   creative   process   that   is   the unknown   and   the   improvised.      In   my   art   I   try   to   point   to   the   real   by   employing   the abstract.   The   real   would   be   the   land   of   gold   that   Anoushka   describes   above   -   an interior   quest   that   may   reveal   the   unity   of   all   humanity.   It   is   said   that   the   Dream   of   life   is full   of   movement   while   the   Dreamer   is   unmoving.   This   shows   that   theDreamer   is   the real.      It   is   this      unmovable   dreamer   I   want   to   provoke,   or   to   tease   out,   in   my   work,   not the   unreliable   flash   of   the   dream.   These   forms   are   not   intended   to   be   seductive   and misleading   in   the   way   we   regularly   perceive   life   -   they   are,   I   hope,      closer   to   the   real   in     their pointing - pointing to the Dreamer.
